The ArkTech series takes place more than 40 years after The Melt – a decade during which the Earth’s remaining glaciers and sea ice were lost. Sea levels rose by approximately 70 metres, a figure based on real scientific data. The map at the start of the book was adapted from an image provided by conservationist Neahga Leonard, using data from NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information and Natural Earth Data, created with software that he normally uses for scientific research papers!

It’s very unlikely that all of Earth’s ice would melt like this, but even the comparatively modest predicted sea level rises of 15–35cm by 2050 will have a severe impact.
